Five tips to manage Panic
Doing breathing exercises or meditation every day will help to prevent panic attacks and relieve them when they are happening.

Regular exercise, especially aerobic exercise, will help you to manage stress levels, release tension, improve your mood, sleep and boost your self-confidence.

Eat regular meals to stabilise your blood sugar levels.

Avoid caffeine, alcohol and smoking – these can make panic attacks worse.

Challenge the thoughts that are causing the panic via Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

CBT is a great way of getting rid of the anxiety/panic for the long term.

The basic principle is that by identifying the unhelpful thoughts and patterns of behaviour that are feeding your panic attacks, you challenge them, begin to believe something else is possible, thereby don’t feel panic.

In essence, anxiety/panic loves a person who is tired, hungry, stressed and not thinking helpfully about life and themselves.

Post-Natal Depression (PND)

Understanding Post-Natal Depression

Bringing a baby into the world is often described as a time of joy and celebration. But for many new parents, the reality can feel very different. Post-natal depression (PND) is far more common than people realise, and experiencing it does not mean you are a “bad parent” or that you don’t love your baby.

What is Post-Natal Depression?

Post-natal depression is a form of depression that can develop any time in the first year after giving birth. It can affect the woman who has given birth and partners too. Unlike the “baby blues” (which usually pass within a couple of weeks), PND is more persistent and can interfere with daily life.

Common Signs and Symptoms

• Persistent sadness, low mood, or frequent tearfulness
• Feeling overwhelmed or unable to cope
• Loss of interest or pleasure in things once enjoyed
• Difficulty bonding with your baby
• Irritability, anxiety, or panic attacks
• Changes in appetite or sleep (beyond usual new-parent tiredness)
• Feelings of guilt, shame, or inadequacy

If you notice several of these symptoms lasting more than two weeks, it may be a sign of PND.

Why Does It Happen?

There isn’t a single cause of post-natal depression. It can be linked to a combination of:

Symptoms of Anxiety

There are several symptoms associated with anxiety and they are often very difficult for the person experiencing them to ignore. They include:

A raised heart rate

Feeling breathlessness

Shaking

Fidgeting

Not being able to concentrate

Although these physical sensations feel very intrusive, there isn’t anything wrong with your body or the physical reaction. What is faulty is the message your thoughts are sending to you body, which is that, you are experiencing a threat to your safety. If this were true then your body equipping you would be very helpful. However, there is often not a real threat and then you are left with a release of adrenalin, triggering the physical sensations above and no need for it.

The only way to prevent these physical symptoms of anxiety is to change your thinking. This is essence of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Which is why it is the most effective treatments for anxiety. It can often be that just half a dozen sessions can significantly allow you to gain control over these intrusive symptoms.

Child and Adolescent Therapy

Child & Adolescent therapy is similar to therapy and counseling for adults: it offers a safe space and an empathetic ear while providing tools to bring about change in thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

Couples Therapy

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)

is a comprehensive psychotherapy that helps you process and recover from past experiences that are affecting your mental health and wellbeing.

EMDR is a structured therapy that encourages the patient to briefly focus on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories.

• Does EMDR work online?

The short answer is yes. There are some important considerations when having online counselling and you need to think about where your counselling sessions will take place.

The space needs to be somewhere you can speak without being overheard, or interrupted. Sometimes sitting in a different room from where you normally relax isn’t possible, so you can sit in a different chair, or move the angle the chair to create a counselling space. This can help you to separate your home and your counselling sessions.

• What if I don’t have a particular memory, or image to work on?

You can process memories without remembering everything. So long as you have a sense of what happened we can start the EMDR process. That might mean that you’re aware of an emotion, or physical feeling that you think might be connected to what’s happened in the past, or it could be an underlying sense that something’s wrong. Often people come to EMDR because something in the here and now is causing them distress, for example, panic attacks, night terrors, or they’re feeling overwhelmed. These are all things that we can work together with.
Lots of people don’t remember everything about their past and sometimes when something distressing, or traumatic happens our mind blocks it out protect us. We can work alongside you to start the EMDR processing with whatever you do remember.

• How long will it take?

Each session lasts 50 minutes and you would meet with your therapist once a week. How long EMDR therapy takes is dependent on what you’re working on. Some people like to book a set number of EMDR sessions and this is normally 12 in total, and others like to start work on a particular memory, image or feeling and to stay as long as they find it helpful.

• How does EMDR help?

EMDR has 8 stages and your therapist will talk you through each of these when you meet and you don’t need to share all the details of your traumatic experience.

EMDR isn’t necessarily about the eye movements, but what this movement does to our brain. The eye movements cause specific changes in the communication between the cortical hemispheres; the right- and left-hand sides of the brain. This bilateral movement facilitates a desensitisation process for a traumatic memory along with cognitive restructuring.

You would focus on a particular point in the past and think about a belief connected to this. For example, I’m not safe, it’s my fault or I’m no good. While EMDR doesn’t remove memories, it does help people to develop new ways of thinking about a past trauma and that can reduce the heat and rawness on recalling something distressing.

Narcissistic abuse

Dr Debbie Smith specialises in working with clients who have been subject to narcissistic abuse. For someone who has been in a relationship with a narcissist it can be very difficult and can leave you with a lot of emotions to work through.

A narcissist may use insults, threats, and accusations to manipulate you into doing what they want. Learning more about narcissistic abuse and talking with a therapist can help you understand them, yourself and then be able to cope.

The sooner you have a better understanding, you can begin the healing after emotional abuse from someone whether that’s been a partner, a parent, a boss or a friend.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy that helps you understand the links between thoughts, feelings and behaviour. This allows you to manage your problems by helping you change the way you think and behave.

CBT helps you manage your symptoms and then encourages you to examine how your actions and thoughts and feelings all operate in a system. It’s based on scientific research of people that reveals that the way you think about a situation affects how you feel and act. In turn, your actions influence the way you think and feel. It’s therefore necessary to change both thinking (cognition) and action (behaviour) at the same time.

CBT is an active therapy, and you’ll be expected to work on your problems between sessions, trying out different ways of thinking and acting, as agreed with your therapist. The aim is for you to develop the skills to become your own therapist. CBT is usually a short-term treatment. For example, a course may consist of between 6 and 30 sessions.

Typical issues that respond well to a CBT approach: anxiety, panic attacks, stress, OCD, Recurrent depression/low mood/ phobias.

The goal would be to gain insight to the problem, gain strategies to manage the symptoms and then almost eliminate the symptoms by changing your thinking and belief system in the long-term.

Psychotherapy is also a specific type of therapy. It may also be described as psychoanalytic or psychodynamic. Psychotherapy is a more in-depth form of therapy than counselling, and potentially CBT, and a psychotherapist can use it to address a wider range of issues.

A process of psychotherapy can help you explore your thoughts, feelings and beliefs, which may involve discussing past events, such as those from your childhood.

They’ll help you consider how your personality and life experiences influence your current thoughts, feelings, relationships, and behaviour. This understanding should enable you to deal with difficult situations more effectively.

Depending on your problem, psychotherapy can be short or long term. Some people may engage in the in-depth analysis that psychotherapy provides for decades, they may also attend up to three times per week, although this isn’t always necessary to achieve the necessary insight and progress.

Typical issues that respond well to psychotherapy are: child sexual abuse, trauma, self-harming, addictive behaviours, perversions, abusive relationships, and extreme anger.

The goal of attending psychotherapy would be to work on resolving deep-seated issues that you are likely to have been carrying with you since childhood. It is intensive work and can be extremely rewarding and liberating, often equipping someone with huge emotional resilience.
